Alan Webber

Alan M. Webber is an award-winning, nationally-recognized editor, author, and columnist. In 1995, he launched Fast Company magazine, a fresh, dynamic entry in the business magazine category. Headquartered in Boston, MA, the magazine became the fastest growing, most successful business magazine in history.

In 2000 Fast Company magazine was sold to Gruner + Jahr for the second largest amount of any magazine in U.S. history. Last year Webber stepped down from his full-time editorial responsibilities, but has retained his title and contributing role as founding editor.

Prior to founding Fast Company, Webber was for 5 years the managing editor and editorial director of the Harvard Business Review. During his tenure, HBR was twice a finalist for National Magazine awards; he oversaw the journal’s visual redesign and created the architecture for the journal’s editorial performance that continues to this day. Earlier in his career Webber was also active in the world of alternative newspapers: He worked as an editor at Willamette Week newspaper in Portland, Oregon, overseeing that paper’s commentary, editorial, and op-ed section, and helped to found The Oregon Times, a political paper headed by a protégé of I.F. Stone.

Webber is the co-author of two business-related books, Changing Alliances, a Harvard Business School study of the competitiveness of the U.S. auto industry, and Going Global, a look at the techniques and tactics needed to succeed in the global economy. His articles and columns have appeared in The New York Times Sunday magazine, the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and the Los Angeles Times, among other publications.

He has recently authored, Rules of Thumb: 52 truths for winning at business without losing yourself, published by Harper Collins.

Josh is also one of the World Economic Forum’s Young Global Leaders.


Michael Conrad

Michael enjoyed 34 years in advertising culminating in his role as Vice Chairmanship and Chief Creative Officer for Leo Burnett Worldwide. He is now Founder and President of The Berlin School of Creative Leadership. The Berlin School is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to research and leadership education for executives in creative industries such as advertising, design, entertainment, interactive, journalism, media and marketing.

Peter Davies OBE

Peter Davies (Vice Chair Wales) began his career in the education sector, initially as a teacher before being appointed Southern Area Director of the CBI Education Foundation. He was subsequently appointed by the DTI to set up the National Teacher Placement Service. It was here that he received an OBE in recognition of his work.

In 1995 Peter joined Business in the Community UK as a Managing Director and latterly has been its Deputy Chief Executive. He led the organisation's campaigning role in improving the social and environmental impacts of business and established an international reputation for his work on corporate social responsibility.

Peter returned home to Wales in 2005 and established the Project Development Partnership, a consultancy that provides project consultancy to business, government and the voluntary sector. Peter also coordinates the work of The Prince's Charities in Wales and is chair of the West Wales branch of The Institute of Welsh Affairs.

Jack Whelan

Mr Jack Whelan recently returned to Australia with more than twenty years experience in environmental policy advocacy for leading international business organisations.

He is currently COO at Environment Business Australia (EBA), a coalition of companies representing the interests of the environment industry and ‘cleantech’ sector, and Head of Private Sector Engagement with the Brisbane-based Foundation for Development Cooperation (FDC).

As a Director of The Prince of Wales International Business Leaders Forum (IBLF) in London, Mr Whelan worked closely with member companies in developing credible and effective corporate responsibility programs. Previously Senior Policy Manager at the International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in Paris, he coordinated collective action, policy and advocacy strategy with leading multinational corporations, and led business representation at UN negotiations on environment, climate change and sustainable development, including the 2002 Earth Summit in Johannesburg. He also sits on the Steering Committee of Landcare International.

Mr Whelan holds an Honours degree in Environmental Science from the University of London and a Masters degree from the University of Edinburgh.

Upendra Shardanand

Upendra Shardanand is CEO and founder of Daylife, which builds globally syndicated newsware enabling unique ways to explore the world of news. Upendra is the former Director of Technology at Time Warner Corporate, where he focused on alliances and tech strategy. Before that, he was Director of Technology for the AOL division's Advanced Services group. Prior to Time Warner, he was a founding partner of The Accelerator Group, a venture firm with offices in New York, Los Angeles, and London. He was a manager at Microsoft, architecting and launching Microsoft Passport. He also drove Microsoft's privacy initiatives and served on many industry bodies in this regard.

Prior to its acquisition by Microsoft in early 1998, Upendra was a co-founder of Firefly Network, a pioneer in the area of personalization and web technologies. He did his undergrad and earned a Masters of Engineering (in 1994) from MIT. His graduate thesis work on Collaborative Filtering for Firefly Network.

Brands often fall short of their potential to do good - reputation without responsibility. Brandkarma will change that.

Tony Surtees

Mr Tony Surtees was one of the first people to identify the spectacular impact that the web would have on our daily lives, shooting to prominence in the 1990s as Vice President of Yahoo!’s commerce division in the US.

Named in 2007 as one of Australia’s Top Ten Digital Entrepreneurs by Smart Company Magazine, today Mr Surtees is founder and CEO of iPrime, the digital arm for the Prime Television Group. iPRIME and Prime Digitalworks have developed technology and content for media businesses to drive integrated media relationships across multiple media platforms.

Mr Surtees chairs a committee to develop an online initiative with the Starlight Children’s Foundation. He was previously a NSW State President for the Australian Marketing Institute and is a frequent keynote speaker at industry seminars and conferences around the globe, addressing numerous investment and industry forums. Mr Surtees is an occasional guest lecturer for Macquarie Graduate School of Management, the Australian Film Radio and Television School and the Australian Graduate School of Management at the University of New South Wales.

Mr Surtees co-authored an e-commerce marketing text with Seth Godin and is also an active committee member of the Stanford Australia Alumni Association, having co-founded the Stanford Australia Entrepreneurs Series. Mr Surtees holds a B.Comm from the University of New South Wales and a Master of Science in Management from the Graduate School of Business, Stanford University, California, where he was a Sloan Fellow.
